Erica Durance joins the cast of Supergirl & other Season 3 news

Season 3 of SUPERGIRL is a few months away (October 9 is the Season Premiere). But until then, we will be posting updates about what we know about the new season. So far we have some behind the scenes photos from Melissa's Instagram account, casting announcements (coming & going) and we know who this season's "big bad" is going to be.

Let's start with with the latest casting announcement, or should we say "recasting". Erica Durance is replacing Laura Benanti in the role of Alura (Kara/Supergil's Krypton birth mother). Laura also played Alura's twin sister, Astra. Both characters are technically dead, Alura passing on when Krypton exploded and Astra meeting her demise at the end of season 1. Alura has appeared in interactive recordings. According to the story in Variety, Laura Benanti is not returning because of her other commitments.

Erica Durance is best known for playing Lois Lane on Smallville, when it was on the CW. She now joins Teri Hatcher (who played Lois Lane on Lois & Clark) and other legacy actors who have appeared in other DC Comics/Superman/Supergirl roles. It is not known how big the role will be this season, but seeing that part of the story line for next season revolves around another spaceship that left Krypton in the final hours...we might see her in flash back scenes.

Other news and hints about the season 3 storyline comes to us with the announcement about actress Odette Annable being cast as "World Killer" Reign (this season's villain).

We know...Reign is a CW TV series...but this has nothing to do with that. But who is Reign? At the end of season 2, we saw a flashback to another baby from Krypton being launched before the planet exploded...right around the same time Superman & Supergirl were leaving. That was Reign.

In the comics, she was a biological weapon created on Krypton. She doesn't know who she is other than her name and that she's called a World Killer. But she also knows Krypton and Earth are some how a part of her past. And she wants to know what that connection is. She finds out Krypton is gone and heads to Earth for answers...and of course to cause trouble for Supergirl.

In other casting news, Katie McGrath (Lena Luthor) is bumped up to series regular, which will make fans happy.

And the other news is about somebody leaving. Floriana Lima (Maggie Sawyer) who played the cop and Alex's love interest in season 2 will leave after a few appearances in Season 3

No updates as of yet if Calista Flockhart will be back more often or not at this point.
